When we hear the words “gastric band”, we think… weight loss surgery. But is surgery necessary if it’s all in the mind?

A woman named Kim Robinson may answer “no”, surgery is not necessary for her. For others though, it may be a different meal on a plate. Kim, who has never physically had gastric band surgery, recently ate her first solid Christmas meal after living on a liquid diet for two years. Kim weighed 21 stone when she chose to have hypnosis for two years to trick her into believing she’d actually physically had gastric band surgery when she hadn’t.

Within 14 months, Kim dropped eight stones – five dress sizes – and is now between size 14 to 16. According to Kim, her hypnotist, Mr Nelson, helped her experience the same feelings that a person really undergoing gastric band surgery would feel. We have to ask, did this all depend on Kim’s openness to suggestion and level of empathy? www.gastricbands.co.uk has its own thoughts.

Hypnosis, empathy and gastric band surgery

People with high levels of empathy, such as those with mirror-touch synaesthesia, can watch a movie and feel emotional and physical responses to what they see on the screen – as if it is really happening to them. It’s because of their overactive mirror neuron system. When reading about a case like Kim Robinson’s, we have to ask:

Did the hypnotist use suggestion that appealed in some way to Kim’s mirror neuron system allowing it to become overactive specifically to gastric band surgery, making her feel as if her stomach was the size of a fist for two years even if it wasn’t?

Or does Kim naturally have a highly active mirror neuron system that makes her a prime candidate for gastric band hypnosis – taking on physical feelings to what she hears and sees in her mind, like stomach = size of fist?

We have to wonder if those with lower levels of empathy paying for “gastric band” type hypnosis would experience the same kind of result. And, if not empathy, what would make this form of hypnosis work for some and not for others?

Nowadays, females, particularly mothers, are deprived of being pampered and beautified due to the typical busy lifestyle. With all the stress and fatigue that mothers have to endure almost every singly day of performing the role, they may be left with a less desirable physical appearance and a low self-esteem. This being said, what they might need to fix these issues is a mummy makeover surgery. If your problem is more concerned with your private parts, then labiaplasty may be the best option for you. Let’s discuss each and how they work. Mummy or Mommy Makeover Surgeries are for women who have had children and are experiencing a different kind of feeling associated with the recent turn of events, from undergoing pregnancy changes, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

First, weight is added in huge amounts as your body begins to store fatty tissue in different parts of your body, such as the stomach, hips, thighs and breasts. The abdominal area is extended to accommodate the space needed by the baby, leaving you with stretchmarks due to the skin’s collagen breakdown. After the baby is born, breastfeeding occurs, which in most cases, results in the loss of breast mass. All of these events deserve a mummy makeover surgery to rejuvenate your long lost beauty. In general, mummy makeover surgeries may be composed of a mix of some, or all, of the following surgical procedures – breast enhancement, breast lifts, buttock lifts, abdominoplasty, and breast reduction, all of which are aimed in enhancing the physical appearance of the woman or mother.

Doctors advise women who plan on undergoing this particular procedure to first achieve or accomplish their desired family size, particularly the children, before being performed with a mummy makeover surgery so as to prevent wasting the procedure once the woman decides to have another baby. Since the cost of a mummy makeover surgery isn’t that easy to compensate for, individuals should plan ahead prior to consulting with a doctor for a procedure schedule. On the other hand, labiaplasty surgery is a procedure that involves severing the extra skin on the labia minora of a female patient. This is done by performing a Z-plasty procedure on the patient to remove or reduce the skin before it hangs below the labia majora and cause further discomforts or undesirable feelings during sexual intercourse and wearing of tight jeans or bikinis.

When most people think of varicose vein treatment, they probably imagine modern, scientific procedures such as surgery or even lasers. I doubt that many people would believe that there are still doctors out there using leeches to treat unsightly or uncomfortable varicose veins, but the fact is that some medical practitioners believe these unusual creatures offer the best chance for a successful and safe varicose vein treatment.

In Australia, leeches are even used in some hospitals, though the treatment is still more likely to be found in alternative medical clinics. Doctors have been using a local species for years in microsurgery, but recently colleagues have been experimenting with leeches as a varicose vein treatment. The leeches are applied to the skin where the worst of the varicose veins are found and as they latch onto the patient’s skin an anticoagulant in their saliva starts to break down the clotted blood that causes the varicose veins. After a short treatment, the unsightly varicose veins have disappeared and in some cases, never return to that particular area of the body.

Of course, many people are uncomfortable with the idea of using such a medieval and archaic medical treatment in modern times, while others are just squeamish about having leeches stuck to their skin. Clinicians at The Private Clinic have a more modern approach, while some other doctors and clinicians who use the creatures for medical treatments insist that leeches are perfectly safe, very effective and that there is no risk of any contamination. The creatures are bred especially for medical use and are only ever used once to prevent the risk of blood conditions passing from one patient to another. In the Australian hospitals where leeches are used, they are destroyed after each use, but one alternative practitioner keeps his in a retirement jar. As well as being more animal friendly, it also allows nervous patients to see the animals before the procedure takes place.

Although hospitals are still more likely to use leeches in surgical situations, it is becoming more and more accepted that leeches could be used for other conditions, and in particular varicose vein treatment.

Making them together can be fun and exciting and when made with a lot of consideration each other and the facts, such decisions often make life better. One decision that most newly married couples make concerns health coverage. Both people may have their own company provided health insurance, or one may have is and the other may rely on the dependable NHS. When it comes to the question of health insurance, newlyweds should consider purchasing private health insurance. Sometimes employer health coverage may be too expensive, especially if children are in the near future.

And for some the NHS may be somewhat out of their tastes. Private medical coverage for preventive routine care and supportive care for illness and injury may make more sense in terms of finances and the needs and wants of the couple. Along with offering a supportive safety-net for the newly-weds and someday their growing family, it could be one of the first major and smart purchases they make together as a couple; one plan between the both of them supports each, instead of one person’s company plan supporting the other or staying on separate plans.

Also purchasing a healthcare plan ensures that when either person transfers to a new job, loses their job, or their company drops the insurance plan or the company plan becomes too expensive, the health cover is there despite any scenario, thus creating real security and independence for the couple. In fact, private health coverage allows for one or the other in the couple to leave their job to fulfill their dreams whether they are to start their own business or stay home with the children
Together a couple can search for the right plan that suits their needs and wants.

Accessing medicalcover.co.uk together will allow both to review solid and detailed information about the various elements of healthcare insurance. With this valuable healthcare insurance information, a couple can decide which plan would best suit them. From there they can access the many major UK health insurance companies to compare rates, plans and any special offers available. They can even receive health insurance quotes with medicalcover.co.uk. Medicalcover.co.uk is a website for one-stop-shopping geared to provide a young couple with the best access to the best health insurance.

Snoring can have a big impact on a person’s life. It can prevent you from sleeping and therefore has a significant impact upon your day-to-day life and may leave you feeling less than 100% in your work or social life. However, if you snore it may not only be affecting you, it could also be affecting the sleeping patterns of your partner. This can often lead to many arguments and subsequent relationship problems.
What do the statistics tell us?
In Britain, a survey carried out by Snoreeze revealed that snoring can cause problems related to intimacy, of which 17% of participants were affected in their study. It also showed that 67% of partners suffered from arguments and tension in their relationship and 25% of couples slept in different rooms. A number of people questioned in the survey also revealed that they had considered living separately or even splitting up due to snoring.
Don’t ignore the problem
Talk to your partner about snoring if it is affecting your relationship and visit your GP to find out ways to stop snoring, which can then help both you and them get a good night’s sleep. There is no point in letting the problem continue, as this will only lead to its augmentation and could eventually be the end of your loving relationship. Even if you stay together continued snoring can form a line down the middle of your relationship, so it is something that must be given the attention it deserves.
Are there any treatments that can help us?
It is important to find snoring treatment that are right for you and your partner and these come in all forms. There are the simple ways to combat the problem, such as losing weight, cutting down on alcohol, quitting smoking and even changing the way you sleep at night. If these don’t work then your dental practitioner can provide you with a mouthpiece to help open your airways while you sleep to reduce the problem of snoring. However, if these solutions don’t work for you then there are always medical procedures for the treatment of snoring conditions, which can be talked about with your local GP to find the best solution for your needs.

In the real world, most if not all people are merely seeking to create a comfortable and safe life for themselves and their families. They work hard to make an honest living and in return they are granted the security they seek. But that security is for day to day living. It ensures a warm and cozy home, with good meals on the table.

Sometimes, however, life throws in an unexpected twist. A child becomes ill, a spouse breaks their leg, or the breadwinner wakes up with a terrible backache. In these cases and many others, security is either nowhere to be found, or right where it belongs, there to support and protect the family. This security is found in health insurance. Having the right insurance plan can make a world of difference when life throws in an unexpected twist or two.

Good health insurance covers the routine doctor’s appointments to help prevent illnesses and, should illnesses arise, covers hospital stays and medical procedures in order to return members of the family back to health. In the unfortunate event of long term illness or injury life insurance will cover nearly expenses, making very hard and stressful situation a little less difficult. Insurance is a necessity for those seeking to secure themselves and their families with preventive care for the routine and supportive care for the unexpected.

In terms of the best insurance, there are many competitive companies with different types and levels of coverage for families to choose from. With all the different options and plans, seeking and finding the right health insurance may seem like a daunting task, but the fact of the matter is that it is extremely simple with the right tools. One of the best tools offered in the endeavor to find the perfect insurance is medicalcover.co.uk. This premier site is expertly geared towards not only informing the buyer about all options available in general healthcare terms, but serving as a main junction between the buyer and some of the UK’s most competitive insurance companies. For real, tangible security, seeking out health insurance from medicalcover.co.uk is the best choice.

The pharmaceutical industry has been around for many years – the first drug store was established thousands of years ago, but the nature of the industry has changed significantly over the course of the last 150 years, with the establishment of large powerful pharmaceutical companies and rapid advances in science, research and technology.

The modern industry is producing new drugs at a rapid rate and research is ongoing to find new drugs to treat conditions more effectively, decrease treatment time and find remedies for conditions which currently have no cure.

Working in the pharmaceutical industry

UK pharmaceutical companies employ thousands of people in a range of different roles and sectors. Jobs range from advertising and marketing to research and manufacturing. Pharmacists are perhaps the most well-known representatives of the pharmaceutical industry. They are trained medical professionals, with expertise in the development and prescription of medications. Pharmacists in the UK must complete a four year degree course before going on to fulfil a year of practical training in a clinical setting, and they must then pass an examination in order to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Pharmacists can work in a variety of settings, including community pharmacy, primary care pharmacy and hospital pharmacy. Pharmacists play an important role in advising patients how and when to take medications and offering advice to prescribers and doctors about when to prescribe certain medications, dosage instructions and drug interactions. For example, some drugs cannot be taken together and it is important that doctors are aware of the interactions between different medications.

New drugs

There is a strict process for approving and licensing new drugs. This is to ensure patients and prescribers are safe and the drugs used are effective. New drugs must be trialled and then licensed –In the UK, drugs can be licensed for use by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency, and a license for use in the European Union can be granted by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency.

Infections can be potentially very harmful so it is important to try and control and prevent the spread of infection, especially in areas such as hospitals where patients are already ill and therefore susceptible to infection and in schools because children do not have fully developed immune systems and are consequently prone to illness.

Steps can be taken to control and prevent infections in a variety of settings, from the home to the hospital. In hospitals, members of staff are highly trained in the prevention of cross-infection and work to strict regulations. They also wash their hands on a regular basis, use alcohol hand gel, wear protective clothing, take special precautions when dealing with infected patients and dispose of waste in specific ways.

At home it is possible to reduce the risk of infection by promoting good personal hygiene, washing clothing, bedding and towels regularly, washing hands before preparing food and after going to the toilet and keeping the house clean. It is advisable to disinfect the kitchen and bathroom on a regular basis.

Sterilisation helps to prevent the development and spread of harmful infections and allows medical professionals to re-use instruments and equipment without passing on infections and illnesses.

Sterilisation is very important for babies because their immune systems are not fully developed, which ultimately means that they are vulnerable to illnesses. Without sterilising units, infections such as gastroenteritis would be much more common and many babies could lose their lives. Sterilisation is recommended for the first year of a baby’s life. During this time their bottles, dummies and feeding accessories, such as spoons and forks, should be sterilised to reduce the risk of developing an infection.

There are different types of steriliser on the market, including cold water sterilisers, electric steam sterilisers and microwave sterilisers. Over the years technology has advanced and feeding equipment and bottles can now be sterilised in a matter of minutes.

Sterilisation, cleaning and disinfection

Cleaning is important in all areas, from the home to restaurants and hospitals, but in some areas simple cleaning is not sufficient and more intensive cleaning methods are required. Disinfection involves removing harmful strains of bacteria and germs; common forms of disinfectant include bleach. Many people use disinfectants in their kitchens and bathrooms and they are also widely used in shops, restaurants, public toilets and bars.

Sterilisation is an even more intensive process, as performed by sterile services departments, which removes all forms of bacteria. Sterilisation is used to sterilise medical and dental equipment, as well as babies’ bottles. Sterilisation is extremely important – it helps to reduce the risk of infection and prevents the spread of illnesses and infections. The work of sterile services departments also enables health organisations to re-use equipment and devices.

Consultants who specialise in these fields are known as gynaecologists and obstetricians, and it should be known that it is not only women doctors who work in this area. Obstetrics and gynaecology are concerned with the detection, diagnosis and treatment of conditions and problems that affect the female reproductive system, disease that are specific to women and the care of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby.

What does the role of the gynaecologist involve?

The work of obstetricians and gynaecologists is varied and interesting; in many cases, gynaecologists work in close co-operation with other medical professionals, including urologists, oncologists, cardiologists, renal specialists, endocrinologists and colorectal surgeons.

Work may include surgery (this may include an emergency Caesarean section or a hysterectomy, for example), which takes place in hospital, delivering babies (the obstetrician is usually called if there are complications during labour or childbirth), performing pelvic examinations and talking to female patients about a wide range of issues, which may include fertility, birth control and counselling for women who have had a miscarriage, for example.

Most specialists work in hospitals, but some also work in the community.

Sub-specialities

Most obstetricians and gynaecologists are qualified in general obstetrics and gynaecology but there are a number of sub-specialities, which include:

Gynaecologic oncology (this involves the diagnosis and treatment of female cancers)

Reproductive medicine

Materno-foetal medicine

Gynaecological urology

Community gynaecology

Becoming a gynaecologist

Many people would assume that women doctors would be more interested in pursuing a career in gynaecology and obstetrics but this is not the case and many male doctors choose to pursue this career path. In order to become an obstetrician or gynaecologist, it is essential to complete further training and pass examinations and assessments after completing a medical degree and completing foundation training years. Obstetrics and gynaecology is a demanding speciality, which involves unpredictable and often long hours; personal qualities and characteristics should include:

People and communication skills: specialists are required to communicate with patients and other members of staff all day every day.

The ability to make decisions and act under pressure

The ability to cope with emotional stress

Physical stamina

The ability to work with other professionals

The ability to sympathise with people and a compassionate, understanding nature.

Manual dexterity and practical skills.
